I pretty much stick to what language I respect a lot, and I know a "fragment" of .... [Who cares what is popular or mainstream]

          Basic, PL / I, Fortran ...

One day, I'll add C and Mathematica to the list.

          I agree with MathematicalPhysicist however:

"People prefer python for programming and scientific computing Mathematica and MATLAB. Although there is no consensus here, we use what is best for their needs."

Most people seem to like Python and Mathematica for wet feet.

I still think that Fortran and C are here to stay and the most useful. They were, are and will be important for a good while, if not close forever.

I hope that someday might be able to see some small piece of code and instantly know what the equivalents are based on <-> C <-> PL / I, in return.

Then again even as flowcharts, gotos, line numbers, the kitchen sink arent languages like Pascal, and fear of Knuth 3 books. [Oh and little intimidating outstanding text and numerical computation Forman Acton]

While you may think of a language, I hope the code can be read [or documents] and has sufficient programming in it, which is the largest part of the battle.

A decade ago, I read a physicist's comments stuck with me.
Fortran and C for him were the most useful, and we should not rule out the usefulness of Basic, PL / I and assembler, and it was very useful ...

I'm not so sure that match their experience with others, but for me * * that made sense. Basic seems to be the easiest of the languages of the people to write and think conceptually, for many, and Fortran is just an older form, smarter and a little more difficult. PL / I is like a super luxury Fortran. At the other extreme, Assembler, and a similar but much more manageable, with final high C and low range of languages in a nutshell.

Honestly, I think my language options always based on how well the textbooks in the languages were, or how I liked the examples and code samples. Where you see the examples he likes and understands, I think "choose" our programming language.

For me a lot of good examples, makes or breaks for me ...

I found this language easy as compare to java. if some one has good command on c or c++ then he can learn this language in very short time.

Experiment Cgi , Perl and PHP, but I can use PHP more. In PHP you can also create groups of subjects in short lines. It's easy and nerveless language.

PHP is the rumor currently on web developers, as well as the language is free to use and practical problems while creating self-motivated web sites.

I have been PHP and ASP.Net and both performed very well for my work. PHP is always in demand because it's an open source and easy to use. ASP.Net is also a good programming language but used by rare developers because of it little bit expensive but you can make your web page more and more dynamically.
