What is the difference between web design and graphic design?

Well, I'm getting closer and closer to graduating but I'm confused on what to take in college.i wanna be a web designer.what courses should i take. i wanna make the websites i make interactive attractive and great and also have fun doing it. but it looks like i should take both web designing and graphic design or what ever.

In college I was a graphic design major and now I am a freelance web designer. After I got my degree, I went back to get a certificate in web design and authoring. It's great you are interested in web design, because that field is really growing, and many businesses always need upgraded, professional sites.

Graphic design courses are great to take, because you learn about typography, page layout, and creative presentation, and this spurs your creativity. Some of the basic web courses are included in the graphic design degree. Most colleges do also offer a web design certificate, which enables you to learn the web tools and programs, such as dreamweaver, photoshop, and flash. Make sure you take a course on css, which is a must for web designers.

Graphic Design would focus on how to design graphically pleasing layouts. You would learn about color theory, typefaces, the relationship between design elements when placed on a page and just generally how to make things, either printed or displayed in another way, look appealing.

Web Design would require many of the skills of a good graphic designer but also, you'd need to learn how to write web pages. You'd probably start by learning HTML (hyper text mark up language) which is the scripting language web pages are made up of. You'd move on to current and updated languages like XML and cascading style sheets.

Though I don't know for sure, I suspect a web designer would make more money.

Our graphic designers and web designers are for the most part separate. I agree with what the other two posters have said, however we don't have our web designers doing html, css, xml, etc. We leave that up to our web developers. Graphic designers do more print, web designers obviously web layouts.

Web development is, of course, programming websites for different clients.
A large company may hire you to be a full time webmaster,meaning you work at updating their own webpage constantly.some webmasters are freelance and can either be hired to do a one time web design for a person or company, or may be hired to make periodic updates.

Graphic design can pertain to graphics and the aesthetically pleasing aspects of a website. However, I know in some graphic design courses there is also an emphasis on teaching students how to design graphics for materials in addition to websites (graphics for t-shirts and marketing materials) for example.

Designing for web and graphic are two different things. Just because a designer is good at one doesn't mean they'll be good at the other. It's necessary to understand that web and graphic share many similarities, but they also have many differences.

Grahpic design lays the foundation of web design. But web design has more to address than just graphic design such as usability issues. Because the web is all about interactions while graphic design is just about idea-conveying.
