background colors?

What do you think make the best background colors for a website? I know it is so important to make sure it is easy to read a website and the background color impacts that.

You need contrast, but not so much so that it's annoying. If you have a dark website, use a lighter background. If you have a lighter website, use a dark background. What I try with my design is to make it interesting for our wide-screen users. Go to colorsontheweb.com and click on the "color wizard". Very helpful.

i prefer, when looking at a website for the background to be a matte colour. white is good as well. Bright colours are difficult on the eyes. It might be interesting to note that green was found to be the easiest colour on the eyes in some recent research, however i personally use a matted gray.

agreed, a friend of mine did a test showing the dark backgroud has less convertion rate

Dark or black backgrounds are really unpopular, even become unpopular on gaming sites I have noticed lately. I would say though that it really depends on the theme of your site and what type of user you are going to be targeting.

I mean if you are a Goth site then using light blue, or Grey for the background and then cheerful blues or greens probably isn't the best route to take

But if you are designing for the average user then using a lighter background and a darker print is usually the best way to go, take this forum for example

Color is a great means of communications, and it is best to make sure that you are saying the right thing. It is not always easy to properly assort the background color with the text color. The readability of a page can be influenced negatively if the color contrast is badly chosen.

Choice of Background color is dependent on the theme of your website and secondly on the font color you are using for content of the website, it should be contrast to the font color of the content otherwise it will not provide a professional look which ultimately effects your website popularity....
