Imagine a website absolutely creative and stunning but scores low in usability issues then its most likely that it may amuses the visitors for the first time but may not guarentee the return, so there should be trade off between the two.

Usability is simply a guideline, if you are designing a chair you need to know how people usually seat down, or the best position to eat, or to work, because all those things matter.
Giving a user a positive experience is giving him a reason to come back.

+1 Usability, you can be creative as you like but if its not very highly usable you wont get a positive response from users. IMHO a highly usable, but less creative website will be more successful than a website with less usability but loads of creativity.

"Usability or Creativity" is not the way we should think in this era of IT world, we must think about "Usability and Creativity" as both are essential to gain good position in eye of end users. if our website is usable but not creative means lack in presentation then we will definitely use some visitors and if our website is creative but not usable then visitors will not come back to our website. so to gain popularity we should take care of both......

It all depends upon the motive of creating a website. If you want to create it just for exploring your creative part, then its okay. But if you want more and more people to come on it and see it, then usability plays a major role.
