Why Use HTML5 rather than Adobe Flash?

What made HTML5 a popular alternative to the use of Adobe Flash for mobile devices? According to a number of web experts, ever since the development and introduction of HTML5 in web development, the use of Adobe Flash had become scarce. The reason why is because of the advent of mobile internet in which many people today have used their mobile devices as means to access the World Wide Web.

Why Use HTML5 rather than Adobe Flash? One of the many reasons why HTML5 became a perfect alternative to the use of Adobe Flash is because HTML5 now has the capability to embed videos without having to use Adobe Flash, which is an advantage for mobile devices.

According to many web experts, HTML5 have added a number of new syntactical features, including the video tag which can now be used to embed videos in a website.

The advantage of using HTML5 for embedding videos compared to the use of Adobe Flash is that HTML5 uses lesser bandwidth as well as CPU usage.

Some users – especially those on Mac OS X and Linux – have complained about the relatively high CPU usage of Flash for video playback. This was partially because the Flash plugin did not use the GPU to render video.

As for animations, HTML5 also uses lesser bandwidth compared to the use of Adobe Flash, though it will still require the use of either JavaScript or CSS 3 is necessary for animating HTML elements. Animation using JavaScript is also possible with HTML 4.

For mobile devices, HTML5 had completely replaced the use of Adobe Flash. This was particularly when the late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, had encourage the use of HTML5 compared to the use of Adobe Flash through a public letter titled "Thoughts on Flash" where he concludes that Adobe "Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content" and that "new open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win."

HTML5 has been developed by many developers and it is more upgraded and unique than Flash which is owned by Adobe. Flash also runs very slowly on some platforms such as Linux and Mac OS X since it does not have access to Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) processing. What this means is that the graphics processing is performed on the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and this causes the application to slow down immensely. Adobe Flash is also not supported by iOS and so a Flash file cannot run on an iOS device such as iPad and iPhone. One of the other key drawbacks of Flash is that in order to play a SWF file, you will need to install Adobe Flash and so you need to ensure that the device and the operating system are compatible with Flash.
When it comes to running on Linux and Mac OS X, HTML5 excels and it has been shown that HTML5 content outshines Flash by running 58% faster than Flash apps. It has also been shown that Flash is not great for mobile devices and laptops whereas HTML5 takes the lead in these areas. Adobe Flash also consumes more power and is not compatible with a touch screen. Because of this, Flash causes a device to heat up. HTML5 on the other hand is compatible with touch screens and it does not have any issues with any device.
HTML5 is becoming increasingly popular with companies such as emaze and Wix (who have previously featured Flash and have made the change to HTML5) providing easy to use, interactive platforms to create presentations and websites that are beautifully designed with minimum work on the users’ end.

With HTML5 you don't have any dependency and you can see directly in your browser but for flash you need extra plugins or third party tool along with your browser.

HTML5 is everything that Flash set out to be and more, because it is an open-source technology built into browsers that has been tried and tested for many years (without any major vulnerabilities), and the quality of playback it supports is impressive in all the most popular browsers (although, being new to the party, Firefox still has a few technical issues to solve, but its HTML5 video playback is still quite good).

What is more, as well as web developers being able to implement the HTML5 <audio> and <video> elements for instant playback without plug-ins, it is possible to use one of HTML5’s other great new features, the <canvas> element, to create real-time video special effects, just using a little JavaScript.
