There are lots of things to think about to make your site Search Engine friendly. But rather than being SE friendly, I think its more important to think about whether they are CUSTOMER friendly. After all, that is the point of the site. I normally start with a few key points such as:

Relevant content
URLs
Links
Menu system
Image optimisation

Amongst other things.
