Responsive web design is the design which is accessible in any kind of layout and device but adaptive web design is designed for some predefined layouts an then it loads only for that layout.

Responsive is the type of web design where it is designed to view in any kind of layout and devices. Adaptive design is the web page is designed in some predefined layout and the web page loads after searching for that layout and device. Adpative is lesser in cost than responsive, but responsive website loads faster.

What is the difference between Responsive and Adaptive web design ?

The major differences between Responsive and Adaptive design are:
Responsive is fluid and adapts the size of the screen. In responsive case, it doesn't matter which type of device you are targeting for your web design. It uses CSS media queries to change the style on the targeted device such as display type, width, height and overall things.
While Adaptive design uses static layouts based on breakpoints which don't respond once they initially loaded. It works to detect the screen size and load the appropriate layout for it.
