Overclocking is easily done if you know what to do. The best way to do it successfully is to have a motherboard that has overclocking features like an ASUS.Overclocking will void any warranties so it is not a step to be done lightly.

Overclocking is the method of forcing a computer to operate quicker than the manufactured clock frequency. Operating voltages may also be changed, which can increase the velocity at which operation remains stable.

overclocking was previously known as undertiming. Most overclocking techniques increase power consumption, ending up with generating more heat that must be dispersed if the component is to remain operational.
The purpose of overclocking is to increase the operating speed of given hardware. The trade-offs are an increase in power consumption and fan noise, the system can become unstable if the equipment is overclocked too much, and the risk of damage due to excessive overvoltage or heat generation. In extreme cases, costly and complex cooling is required.Conversely, undercloking trades off slower operation to reduce power consumption and temperature, cooling requirements (and therefore the number and speed of fans, allowing quiet operation) and, where relevant, increase battery life per charge. Some manufacturers underclock components of battery-powered equipment to improve battery life or implement systems that reduce the frequency when operating under battery.
This practice is quite extended among the most demanding hardware users, that try to maximaze their equipment performance.

Overclocking is something you do to make your cpu go faster. This needs to be back up by a nice motherboard and decent psu and ram.
Am running Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard and a FX 8370 8 core cpu and am keeping it cool with noctua d15 and a be quiet! 800 case, I can get 4.7 GHZ overclock from my set up, I have pushed it harder, but lol a funny smell was coming from the case.
Here is proof of one of my overclocks

Overclocking is the action of increasing a component's clock rate, running it at a higher speed than it was designed to run. This is usually applies to the CPU or GPU, but other components can also be overclocked.

First of all never overclock your system as it results in degrading the life of system. Secondly OVER-CLOCKING is method to run processor in higher speed then it was made for. Eg- some people overclock there system to run at 2.00 GHz speed instead of running it at predefined speed ( 1.80 GHz).

Over clocking is a way to run processor clock faster then for what it is designed to run in.

Overclocking is resetting some computer component so that it runs faster than the manufacturer-specified speed. The purpose of overclocking is to boost performance.
