Can I trust free web hosts?

I've had a terrible experience with free hosts. Both of the ones that I tried in the past had their servers crash, resulting in full data loss. Since web hosting is so cheap I'd recommend just paying for it; or even host it on your own.

Well there are a lot of free web hosts that work, but I guess paid hostings are much more effective.
