    Re: Colocation vs. Dedicated

It used to take centuries for compound words to merge. These days, it takes days or weeks.

        Re: Colocation vs. Dedicated

coloaction: your server (you bought it) will be placed in their datacenter with fast internet connections. ofcourse you pay for it again.

It's your server, you can take it anytime you want because you payed the full price for it.
Advantage: Nobody can ever take it from you ^^
Disadvantage: More things you need to take care of, if you rent a dedicated server you will get everything installed and ready for you and support. With colocation you wont, only do this if you are very advanced user.

Just my two cents, colocation can as well be managed and unmanaged, managed colocation is often referred to as dedicated server rentals.
When using this form of service, the provider has a dedicated server that is preconfigured to certain specifications with selected software applications on it that the customer can use within limits. In addition to this, the provider generally takes the responsibility of providing any software upgrades to the provided applications on the system and general maintenance such as reboots, hardware issues and any backups they may include.

That's the type of service that companies like
serverpoint.com and atriustech.com offer to their clients.

Colo means you buy a server as well as reckspace in the datacenter and dedi means you buy the server as well as if you are an experienced person you manage it yourself but if not you hire someone for it.

If you believe about it, you could purchse a major machine for about $1500, then colocate it for $70/month. If you plan on continuing it for a while, colo is a more cost effective option.

The decision whether to colocate or lease depends upon the long-term goals of your business, the complexity of your solutions and the number of servers your business requires. Colocation gives your business the flexibility to plan for growth, to incorporate mirroring, load balancing and other options that are not available on a leased basis. If your business and your clients expect a high degree of uptime assurance, a colocated solution will be better in the long run.

Colocation is beneficial if you have a long term hosting plan.. If you just need to host for a short term, a dedicated server is a better option for you.

I would probably prefer a dedicated server due to the greater control I would get over it, something which would be essential in a business environment.
